Quite
a few Florida businesses can be prone to seasonal sales slumps.
Is your business prepared for the off-season? Here are some tips from
business plan expert Rhonda Abrams to help you through the lean months.
MANAGE YOUR CASH
The single most important step for survival of your seasonal business is rigorously managing your cash. This takes discipline. During the high season, set aside a certain percentage of sales in a reserve account. Get
to know your banker, and establish a line of credit. You've got to be
able to pay your bills when the weather cools and the tourists leave.
STAY IN TOUCH YEAR ROUND
Some people who run seasonal companies act as if their customers actually vaporize during the offseason. Just
because they're not in your store or in your town doesn't mean they've
ceased to exist. Develop a mailing list of your high-season customers
and create a monthly email newsletter. Let
past customers know what's going on in your tourist community or with
their sport or hobby even in the offseason. Make sure they remember your
name.
CREATE OFF-SEASON DEMAND
Look for creative or innovative approaches to attract customers to your business in the offseason. For
example, if you run a bed and breakfast in a winter tourist location,
organize special events, such as writer's conferences or yoga retreats,
to attract guests in summer months.
